8 Snapshots Showing The Spectacular Stockholm Metro

8 snapshots showing the spectacular Stockholm subway

Perhaps you have traveled “underground” many times in your life in the city where you live, or while you were traveling. Some meters are more modern than others and serve to get us from here to there faster. But also, in the case of the Stockholm metro, we are talking about a true work of art. Do you want to know this spectacular Swedish service?

This suburban network has 100 stations in about 110 km of extension, divided into three lines: blue, red and green. In addition to being efficient, the Stockholm metro does not go unnoticed by anyone. And it is that  its stations are really picturesque for its unique decoration.

The most beautiful stations of the Stockholm metro

The Stockholms Tunnelbana (in Swedish) is one of the means of transport preferred by residents of the Swedish capital and also by tourists who increasingly visit the city. We are almost talking about an underground museum. If you buy the SL Access Card you can travel without restrictions or buy a single ticket. The most striking stations are:

1. Radhuset

It is located on the island of Kungsholem, belongs to the blue line and was opened in 1975. It is located below the Courts.

Its ceilings are terracotta color that simulate a sandstone cave.  In addition, it presents a large concrete column that seems to have been swallowed by the rock. Another of the most photographed corners is that of the boots “glued” to the ceiling.

2. Kungstradgarden

It also belongs to the blue line and according to visitors and users it is the most beautiful of the entire Stockholm metro. It is a kind of underground garden, with sculptures and paintings in green and red.

The decoration is fantastic and represents “the King’s Garden” one of the largest and most important parks in the city, which is located above the station.

3. T-Centralen

It is the only metro station where the three service lines meet. It was created in 1957 and is right in the center of Stockholm (being the busiest). In addition, it was the first to showcase the designs and paintings of artists. The main colors here are white and blue.

We can see creepers, everyday scenes and much more on ceilings and walls. As if that weren’t enough, the escalators that offer somewhat “psychedelic” lights, and at the same time elegant, are also striking.

4. Fridhemsplan

It is a point of transfer or combination between the green and blue lines that was opened in 1952 and renovated in 1975. Its characteristic colors are green and gray, and it is located in the Kungsholmen district. You can see symbols and marine objects protected by glass cabinets. While you wait for the subway, visit this museum of the sea under the ground.

5. Universitetet

It belongs to the red line and is located north of the city. The decoration was in charge of a Belgian artist who was inspired by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Travels of Linnaeus to design this beautiful station. In it you can see the 12 panels of the adventure of the famous Swedish scientific traveler.

6. Solna Centrum

Although it belongs to the blue line, the main color at this station is red. Its walls simulate a great cavern … as if you were taking a trip to the center of the earth! In addition, the paintings evoke environmental motifs and the country’s concern in 1975 about rural depopulation.

7. Stadion

It is on the red line and very close to the Stockholm Stadium (in the Ostermalm district), where the Olympic Games took place in 1912. There are many sculptures and signs with references to that world sport event.

8. Horstull

It is part of the red line and is another of the stations that you cannot miss. It displays marine species and fossils in stained glass along the platform. This collection tries to demonstrate the importance of the sea for the Swedes.
