Patagonia is a paradise on Earth that many travelers want to know, if not all. It is there, in the south of Argentina, where we find an incredible natural phenomenon, the Perito Moreno glacier . If you haven’t heard about him yet, let’s get to know him together! You will be completely mesmerized by its beauty.

What is the Perito Moreno glacier

The Perito Moreno is an impressive glacial phenomenon. It is a block of ice with a front that reaches five kilometers in width.  It rises 60 meters above the water level of Lake Argentino, to which pieces of ice fall, generating a roar similar to a storm.

As it advances, the front reaches the edge of the lake and closes the flow of water, which creates a reservoir that generates a water difference of about 20 meters. Water then begins to leak into the ice, creating a huge vault.

That is when the phenomenon most sought after by many happens, the rupture of the glacier. To eliminate this unevenness that he himself has caused, and because of these leaks, that vault falls into the water. This usually happens every four years, although there are continually small landslides that are also worth seeing.

If you are one of the most intrepid, do not miss the opportunity to walk on the glacier. Another option is to take a tour of Lake Argentino on a catamaran, where you can see other glaciers, which although they are smaller, are also really beautiful.

If you enter through Los Glaciares National Park, you will be walking along a path opposite the glacier, so the first view you will have of it will be semi-aerial. Then it will appear to you like a huge mirror of ice on the waters, we have no words to describe such beauty! Of course, you will not be able to see the end no matter how hard you try …

They say that nature is wise, others say that there is a creator who made it. Regardless of what we create, the truth is that   this work of indescribable beauty seems to have been made to leave us speechless.

And to enjoy all its splendor, there is a wonderful viewpoint from which to enjoy the most spectacular views of the glacier. Right in front of the highest ice wall of the Perito Moreno there is a naturally eroded elevation where some walkways have been installed.

It is the best point from the mainland to admire the glacier’s ice tongue. Walking on those walkways will make you feel that you have the glacier there, next to you, and that you could almost touch it with your hand.

Although the most impressive landslides happen once every four years, the natural spectacle seems inexhaustible. There are constant small landslides that cause an impressive rumble.

The walkways that allow you to contemplate the glacier and the catamarans that navigate the lake offer you an unforgettable experience. Of course, it  is not possible to predict with absolute certainty when the large landslides will occur , nor the small ones. But if you are lucky enough to be there, it will be an impressive adventure.

Even if you were not that lucky, just enjoying seeing this sea of ice on the lake and listening to its sound will have already been worth the trip there. The beauty of this glacier is such that you can surely spend hours looking at it without getting tired.
