History of lago di Como

Lago di Como has a long history that begins at the dawn of life on the planet itself. During the Quaternary period, this place was a huge ice- filled basin that dug a deepening cavity.

This cavity, which was slowly carved out by the ice century after century, piercing the rocks and eroding the land, ended with the appearance of water thanks to the rise in temperatures, which gave rise to small populations already in prehistoric times and to the same lake.

Ancient peoples such as the Gauls and the Romans inhabited this area, using different locations as a key part of their communications between the northern regions of Italy with the Pianura Padana.

After the different conquests and dominations of different peoples, Como managed to become an autonomous municipality around the year 1000, becoming a prosperous city in northern Italy.

However, foreign peoples did not stop arriving and took over the area, such as the Spanish, Austrian or French.
