Fantastic destinations to arrive by car from Madrid

Although the train can take us to many destinations near the Spanish capital, there is nothing like the comfort of going in our own vehicle. And, without traveling excessive distances and by car from Madrid, you can visit absolutely charming towns and cities. We offer you some ideas that are ideal for a getaway!

Where to go by car from Madrid ?

In reality, we will focus on those nearby destinations, no more than two hours away by road, so you can decide whether to do just one visit or stay a little longer.

1. Segovia

We start with a very famous destination near the capital of Spain that is only 90 kilometers from the well-known Puerta del Sol. Its wonderful Roman aqueduct is one of its great attractions.

But Segovia has many more corners and wonderful buildings. The image of its fortress is absolutely  charming . As is its slender cathedral.

2. Ávila

It is located 115 kilometers from Madrid and its history is as vast as its monuments. Of course, its great jewel are the medieval walls, perfectly preserved and that can be walked through its upper part.

You should also visit the extramural churches of San Vicente, San Segundo, San Andrés and San Pedro. The Plaza del Mercado Grande, the Cathedral of Salvador, the Episcopal Palace, the Town Hall and the Torreón de los Guzmanes are other places of interest.

3. Pedraza and Sepúlveda (Segovia)

In the tour we can also add the Hoces del Río Duratón, all in the province of Segovia. In this getaway by car from Madrid we combine nature with cultural heritage.

The town of Pedraza with its medieval quarter and its Romanesque church; Sepúlveda, with its fifteen churches, and the Hoces del Duratón with its great canyon home to griffon vultures is an excellent plan for a day or a weekend.

4. Toledo

It is the most visited city in the vicinity of Madrid. It is only 71 kilometers from the capital and yours is a unique beauty. Beauty of Toledo was born from the combination of ancient constructions of three religions : Christian, Jewish and Muslim.

Within its heritage we can highlight the Alcázar, the Cathedral of Santa María and the Alcántara bridge. Also noteworthy are the gates of the Sun, Bisagra and Cambrón, the Castle of San Servando, the Monastery of San Juan de Reyes, the Synagogue of El Tránsito, the Cristo de la Luz mosque-oratory and the El Greco Museum.

5. Cuenca

165 kilometers from Madrid, Cuenca has a great religious and civil heritage. On your walk, do not forget to visit its unfinished cathedral or some of its churches, such as those of San Andrés, San Miguel or El Salvador. You should also visit the Episcopal Palace and the convents of San Pablo, La Merced or San Felipe Neri

But if there is something characteristic of Cuenca, it is the Hanging Houses on the Huécar sickle. Do not forget to cross the bridges of San Pablo and San Antón.

6. El Escorial (Madrid)

To speak of El Escorial is to speak of the magnificent monastery. An imposing Renaissance building built by order of Felipe II that stands out for its size and the richness of some of its rooms, such as the library. Without forgetting that this is also a royal pantheon.

But, in addition, the natural environment in which El Escorial is located is fantastic. Perfect to enjoy some routes that lead to viewpoints from which to admire wonderful views.

7. The Burgo de Osma (Soria)

The getaway in this case takes us to the province of Soria, a place where Christians and Muslims fought in dozens of battles. And from that time a superb castle remains. But here you can  also admire a beautiful cathedral, that of the Assumption, with a beautiful tower.

Strolling through the historic center of the town you will see beautiful wooden porticoes. And don’t miss the old San Agustín hospital, the Plaza Mayor, the Episcopal Palace, the Carmen Convent and the Santa Catalina University.

8. Chinchón and Aranjuez (Madrid)

Southeast of Madrid, 44 kilometers from the capital, Chinchón is one of the most beautiful towns in Spain. Among its places of interest we can highlight the medieval Plaza Mayor, the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, the Castle of the Counts and the convents of San Agustín and Las Clarisas.

A few kilometers away is Aranjuez, a beautiful town on the banks of the Tagus River. Not to be missed is its wonderful royal palace. And, very especially, stroll through its gardens.

You have already seen it, by car from Madrid you can reach absolutely wonderful corners in a short time. If you have time in your visit to the Spanish capital, do not hesitate and do one of these excursions.
