The Kaieteur Falls are located in the Kaieteur National Park, in Guayana Esequiba, a territory in dispute between Venezuela and Guyana. They were discovered in 1870 by Charles Barrington Brown, a British geologist from the Colony of British Guiana.

The Kaieteur Falls, located in the Potaro River channel, have a free fall of up to 226 meters from the point of view of the water until the first time it touches rocks. The water then flows into a series of steep waterfalls that cause the waterfall to reach 256 meters. They are twice as tall as Victoria Falls and four times as large as Niagara Falls.
