Tossa de Mar, also known as the “Pearl of the Costa Brava”, is located between Lloret de Mar and Sant Feliu de Guixols, in Girona. The town is in the region of La Selva, about 90 kilometers from Barcelona and just 130 from the border with France.

Due to its past as a maritime and fishing city, it has been creating its friendly, picturesque and quiet character. And as if that were not enough, since 1931 the walled area of ​​Villa Vella has been a historical-artistic monument.

The beaches and coves of Tossa de Mar

The main attraction of the Costa Brava in general, and Tossa de Mar in particular, are its wonderful beaches and coves. The most important, and the one you cannot miss, is the Platja Gran, awarded with the blue flag for the great quality of the sand. Also relevant is the platja d’es Codolar, located on the other side of the wall and accessible on foot.

As for its coves, we can highlight Giverola, about five kilometers from Tossa de Mar; and Pola, about four, surrounded by one of the most particular landscapes of the Costa Brava.

Also near this area we can find the Bona cove, smaller than the previous ones, but a perfect enclave for snorkeling, since it is a practically virgin cove.

If we move to the south of the municipality, we find the cove d’en Carlos. This is a small and remote cove with golden sand and high quality waters. Nearby we can also find the Cala Figuera, with coarse sand and located on steep terrain.

The last of the coves to which we will refer in Tossa de Mar is the Morisca cove, about five kilometers from the town. This is a virgin cove, difficult to access, but of great beauty.

The historical heritage of Tossa de Mar

As we said at the beginning, Tossa de Mar has a great historical heritage, so between beach and beach you can discover all the secrets of the town’s history.

We can find remains even from Prehistory, since the municipality has important archaeological sites, also belonging to the Roman era. There you can visit the Villa Romana dels Ametllers, one of the most important in the old province of Tarraco.

Although these remains are also important, without a doubt, the banner of the city is the Villa Vella enclosure. It was built to protect the town from pirate attacks. Of great importance are its towers and towers and it is especially worth visiting its interior and discovering the beautiful and narrow streets.

We can also highlight other buildings and monuments, such as the church of San Vicente, the House of Culture, the old hospital of San Miguel or the sanctuary of Sant Grau, 15 kilometers from Tossa de Mar.

Another of the city’s flagships is its wonderful nature and the landscapes that surround Tossa de Mar.  One of the most beautiful and outstanding enclaves is the Caridetes massif. It is a natural area of ​​great singularity, which includes the town of Tossa, as well as part of others such as Lloret, Santa Cristina de Aro or Sant Feliu de Guíxols.

Due to its climatic characteristics, such as humidity, abundant rainfall or the easterly winds that blow there, it is home to a fauna and flora typical of the Atlantic on the Mediterranean coast. For this reason, it has become one of the main ecological attractions of Spain.

Also very close to Tossa de Mar, just 35 kilometers away, is the wonderful Montseny Natural Park. This is the oldest park in Catalonia and one of the most significant in the community.

This is a network of spaces protected by their value and richness of landscape and nature. In addition, in 1978 it was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.
