Essential Places To See In Hamburg

Essential places to see in Hamburg

There is a lot to see in Hamburg, a city in northern Germany. A city of harsh winters and mild summers, but where its climate does not prevent it from being one of the most vital, bohemian and fun German cities.

If you wonder why Hamburg is so lively, we will tell you that it is largely due to its status as an important seaport, even though the city is not on the seafront. You ask, how can it be? Well now we are going to try to clarify that and other issues, as well as present the most essential things to see in Hamburg.

It is very easy to get to Hamburg. It can be done thanks to the important German road network and also through its railways. Likewise, it can be reached by air, landing at the international airport, located less than half an hour by metro from the city center. And of course, it can be reached by sea, disembarking in the port of Hamburg.

That is to say, we return to the question of a seaport without a sea, and that is that Hamburg is bathed by the Elbe river, which as it passes through the city is really impressive  and navigable until its mouth in the nearby North Sea. Thanks to this, historically huge ships have sailed through it, unloading both goods and people in the city for centuries.

But this port is not only a gateway, it is a tourist attraction in itself. It is an area organized by means of canals, on which rise the Speicherstadt, the most emblematic buildings in Hamburg.

These are buildings that were huge port warehouses raised above the water thanks to piles. Well, many of them today are restored and are dynamic cultural spaces. And many others are restaurants, pubs and nightclubs, since this is an area that must be visited by day and night.

And also in the port area, there is the Reeperbahn. It is the famous “red light district” of Hamburg. Some streets with a very libertine atmosphere that maintain part of the essence of what the seaport was in other times.

We continue in the port, but now aboard a beautiful sailboat transformed into a museum. A unique environment to understand the living conditions of sailors in the past. Brave and tough lives, no doubt.

A ship that is pure history, since it sailed for almost a century, and since 1983 it is one of the most beautiful and interesting museums in Hamburg, with all kinds of pieces related to navigation.

The Beatles Platz

The most illustrious visitors to the city were the Beatles, who actually began to forge their legend in Hamburg, where they held some intense concerts in the legendary Star-Club concert hall.

Today in the St. Pauli neighborhood they are still remembered in a square that bears their name and that pretends to be a gigantic vinyl record with the figure of the four Liverpool musicians. Without a doubt, one of the must-see places in Hamburg, especially if you are a fan of the group.

And as perhaps all that we have named in this article about Hamburg are attractions for adult travelers, we are also going to dedicate a note for those of you who do family tourism to Hamburg. If so, don’t miss its Botanical Garden, located in the heart of the city  and divided into three most interesting sections.

And of course, it is much more than advisable, regardless of age, to go see the Miniatur Wunderland, where you can see the largest miniature train in the world, thanks to which you take a virtual trip around the world. An attraction, as we said, for all ages.
