A Caravan Route Through Italian Tuscany
Italian Tuscany is one of the most interesting vacation destinations for its historical, artistic and cultural heritage. Its landscapes, of the most varied, make it possible to enjoy beautiful cliffs, islands and even beaches. Let’s not forget its villages, palaces and abbeys, as well as an impressive gastronomy.
If we have a week or even 12 days, the Italian Tuscany is the perfect place to reach our motorhome. The rest areas are very well marked and provide optimal solutions for the traveler. We are talking, therefore, of a perfect destination for all art, cycling, mountain or water sports enthusiasts.
The route through Italian Tuscany begins
A good place to start the route is Pietrasanta. This is a town where art is the main protagonist, with monuments such as the Duomo or the church of San Martín.
Another town just 40 kilometers away that deserves to visit is the famous Lucca. There we can discover its attractive historic center, together with its medieval atmosphere. Walk through its impressive Renaissance wall and leisurely stroll through its streets. Near the town there is an area for motorhomes to rest.
Mandatory stop in Florence!
Florence is the next point we arrive at by taking the A11 and looking for the E76. We are talking about the capital of the region and the cradle, without a doubt, of the Renaissance.
Many are the attractions of the city. Don’t miss the Palazzo Vecchio, the Ponte Vecchio, the Palazzo Pitti, the Uffizi Gallery, etc. Here, you will also have a good area for motorhomes. So enjoy no less than two days in this wonderful place.
We follow the route through the towns of the region
About 80 kilometers away we have another beautiful town, such as Arezzo. In ancient times it was a Roman settlement as it was on a hill. Both its palace and the Medici fortress, as well as its cathedral, are worth a visit. In Arezzo there is also an area for motorhomes.
Other towns that are worth visiting, and that are close to each other, are Montepulciano, Pienza and Bagno Vignoni. All three are enchanting destinations, both because of how beautiful the towns are and because of their landscapes. The road you pass through is an impressive combination of scenic beauty, where art and nature merge into one.
Siena, another essential stop
Starting from Bagno Vignoli, we can continue towards Siena, which has been a World Heritage Site since 1995. This is the medieval city par excellence. We can highlight its Plaza del Campo, the palace, the cathedral, the Gaia fountain and the Mangia tower.
Continue the route through more towns
Continuing along SR 68 we can visit Volterra, as well as two beautiful towns, such as Monteriggioni and San Gimignano, which are worth discovering through their streets to see how well preserved their walls and towers are. This area has two overnight areas for motorhomes in Volterra and San Gimignano.
Finally, we bow down in Pisa
We finish this route through the Tuscan area in Pisa, where you can visit the bell tower of the Cathedral of Santa María Assunta (the tower of Pisa), its baptistery, the Camposanto and the Square of Miracles, which is located in the center from the Italian city.
Tips for touring Italian Tuscany
Normally, gas stations do not tend to serve on Sundays, unless they have automatic pumps. And it is worth remembering that the museum’s rest day is usually on Mondays. For more information, it is best to consult the specific museum you want to visit.
The best way to visit the famous Uffizi Gallery in Florence is to approach it around 8 in the morning, since capacity is limited, and groups that have a reservation and that often go there collapse access.
