The natural wealth of the Phi Phi Islands is well worth the great tourist interest they have aroused. But the truth is that much of the blame for his fame has nothing to do with it. The answer, as in many places where its influx suddenly increases, is in the cinema.

The film La Playa , starring Leonardo di Caprio, was shot in this archipelago. In this way, the beach on the island Koh Phi Phi Leh is one of the most famous in the world thanks to that Hollywood production. And it is also one of the most visited by tourists.

And, while tragic, another reason for its fame is the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. This natural disaster left more than 260,000 victims, especially in Indonesia and Sri Lanka. There were more than 5,000 confirmed deaths in Thailand, although estimates put the number at more than 8,000.

As for the Phi Phi Islands, the tsunami left them devastated and wiped out everything in its path. However, all the infrastructure, businesses and services were restored in a short time and the islands were able to welcome the great tourist influx again.
