Sitges and its effort for tourism excellence

Located to the south of the great metropolis of Barcelona, Sitges has been one of the most visited and inspiring towns in Catalonia for many decades. There good know-how in relation to tourism is the norm. That is why everyone who goes to Sitges is welcome. And most importantly, you feel comfortable there.

As a good town on the shores of the Mediterranean, the town of Sitges offers a fantastic climate almost all year round. Although it is true that it is with the good weather of summer when it is best to take advantage of the presence of the different beaches that are in the urban area itself.

But don’t think that Sitges is just a sun and beach destination. It has much more to offer. For example, a beautiful old town with an outstanding heritage. Or it is also a place of intense cultural life.

In addition, it is a mecca for those who love shopping. And of course, its many restaurants make its gastronomic offer another tourist value.

The old town of Sitges, raised above the sea and with its whitewashed buildings, divides the long line of urban beaches that the town has in two. On one side of that old town is the beach of San Sebastián, perhaps the most familiar of all.

While on the other side there are a series of small beaches, all linked by the promenade. The first is La Fragata beach, and after it goes the rest. Between all of them they form almost a continuum, although they are separated by different breakwaters.

The old Sitges

The most repeated photograph in Sitges is precisely the one taken from La Fragata beach towards the old town, dominated by the church of San Bartolomé and Santa Tecla. To get there, you have to climb a staircase from the Plaza del Baluarte, since this area is elevated with respect to the sea.

Not only the church awaits us there, but also the Miguel Utrillo square, the Racó de la Calma, Fifth Avenue (which ironically is a narrow alley), and the Maricel de Mar and Maricel de Tierra palaces. Two buildings linked together by a flyover over the street and whose whitewashed architecture is adorned with black wrought iron bars.

And next to those palatial mansions, there is the Cau Ferrat Museum. That house was the home of the modernist painter Santiago Rusiñol, and today it is a museum in his memory. Many of the paintings he made and collected are kept and exhibited there, including some by El Greco.

The inspiration of Sitges

The case of Rusiñol is the most emblematic of the many artists who chose and choose Sitges as their place of residence. It is still like that today. Therefore, it is not surprising the wide cultural offer with which it surprises its visitors.

In this cultural calendar, for example, the many artistic exhibitions offered by the abundant galleries scattered throughout the urban area are striking.

And some even visit Sitges for cultural reasons and on very specific dates. For example, during the Sitges Fantastic Film Festival, held annually between late winter and early spring.

Shopping in Sitges

The shopping is another option that leverage many travelers who come to Sitges, both summer and the rest of the year. From what we have said, you can already imagine that it is an ideal place to buy art. But not everything is so expensive and exclusive. In fact, the most common purchases are handicrafts and fashionable clothing.

Sitges restaurants

As we said at the beginning, here it is also possible to eat wonderfully well. You can find almost any type of food to satisfy the palates of various origins who spend their holidays in this town.

However, we recommend those fish restaurants and, above all, with rice dishes, since there are high quality restaurants on the seafront.

And with the know-how of cooks and good products, excellent treatment and service always come together, because as the title of this article indicates, Sitges boasts and has worked for many years on its “tourist excellence”.
