The beach of Silencio in Asturias, a magical corner

Can you keep a secret? We are going to talk to you about a beautiful Asturian cove located between cliffs: Playa del Silencio. Surely with her name you are already interested in knowing her because you are looking for a quiet destination for your next summer vacation. But peace is not the only thing that characterizes it. Do you want to know what else? Then keep reading this article!

Playa del Silencio , natural paradise

When the hot days begin, we begin to think about the beach, even if our vacation is a long way away. But perhaps you are no longer there to go to places full of people and you are looking for something a little calmer to be with your family, with your children or your partner.

Playa del Silencio is an ideal option, one of the few almost virgin places left in Spain and where you can enjoy all the peace you deserve during your work break. Before you start to pack your bags, you should know that it is difficult to get to this place and that it is not a recommended place for addicts to social networks, mobile phones and any technological device.

Here time has stood still for thousands of years and will continue (we hope so). It does not have a large sandy area, as we are used to, and perhaps that will baffle you a bit as soon as you get to this beach. The ground is made up of boulders and the closest you can leave the car (or any means of transport) is at the top of a cliff.

That’s right, afterwards you will have to walk down very carefully between the cliffs. Don’t worry if you’re not that adventurous: they recently installed a rather steep wooden ladder (not suitable for the fearful).

It is worth the effort to get to Playa del Silencio!

The reward of having gone down a cliff without looking down and avoiding some obstacles is nothing more and nothing less than a beautiful beach of Silence. It is circular in shape, 300 meters long and 30 meters wide and the only thing you will find is natural beauty.

It does not have a lifeguard, no showers, no colored flags or bars. Nothing at all. But that does not matter because as soon as you step foot in its emerald blue waters you will feel that you have arrived in paradise. It doesn’t even have waves!

The beach is bordered to the south by a cliff that scares even the bravest, to the north with the horizon that seems to never end and both to the east and west with rocks that protect it from the winds. You will be like “trapped” in this beauty. And how good you will feel!

Silence beach, between tides and diving

The geography of this beautiful beach changes completely on two occasions: at low tide and at high tide. When the moon takes the water out to sea, a small cove called “el Riego” opens up and several islets can be seen. Do not trust that the water will take time to return because that can happen in a matter of minutes. Therefore you must pay attention to their movements.

If you like diving and discovering underwater beauty, the beach of Silencio is ideal for you. You can dive up to 18 meters deep and see live and direct all the variety of flora and fauna typical of this area, especially mussels.

But if you are interested in taking a bath and lying in the sun … you can also do it. Of course, do not forget that the rocks on the shore can be a little “treacherous” and hurt you. Better wear your sandals if you don’t want to suffer all day.

The people who live near this place know it as “the gaviero of silence” due to the colony of seagulls that nest on the cliff. It is frequented in addition to birds by fishermen (sports and amateurs).

Whether you are on the Cantabria and Cudillero side, Galicia or southern Asturias, you should go along the Cantabrian Highway to the town of Castañeras or Novellana. Here you leave your car parked and continue on foot for about 250 meters along a dirt road to the cliff. Don’t worry, there are signs that indicate the correct path all the time.

If you travel by train you get off at Novellana and from there you have to walk a little more but as we have already told you, it is worth the effort. As soon as you have contact with the beach of Silence, you will know why we tell you.
