The canyons of the Ebro are a consequence of the erosive action of this river as it passes through the lands of Burgos. Here, the water course opened a gap that at some points reaches 200 meters deep in the calcareous moors of Las Loras.

But its value goes beyond the landscape. The vegetal wealth is enormous, with walnut trees, beech trees, gigantic oaks or a great variety of aromatic plants. A vegetation that makes this place the greenest corner of the province of Burgos.

To enjoy the best views, it is best to go to the viewpoint that is on the route that leads to Pesquera de Ebro. A place that is easily accessible by road and from where you can see a panorama that takes your breath away.

Routes in the canyons of the Ebro

The Ebro canyons are an ideal place for hiking. The most famous route is the one that runs between Pesquera del Ebro and Orbaneja del Castillo, as it offers spectacular views of the river dissection.

The route covers a distance of about 15 kilometers, which translates into a duration of approximately six and a half hours. But time will fly by while you admire a landscape of enormous beauty that vultures, eagles or hawks fly over.

Simpler, but just as interesting, is to tour part of the Rudrón canyon. The path runs for three kilometers. It runs parallel to the course of the Ebro, at the bottom of the gorge, and crosses the town of Covanera until it reaches the Pozo Azul, a lagoon of an intense turquoise color.

And there is a third route, which includes the rural enclaves of Tudanca or Cidad. It is a circular route that begins and ends at the same point: the town of Villarcayo. It is perfect for mountain biking.

Whichever route we choose, we must follow some tips, such as bringing water or isotonic drinks to hydrate ourselves, as well as something light to eat and regain strength. You must also wear suitable clothing and footwear, and we must inform ourselves in advance of the conditions of the route and the weather.

In addition to surprising us with the impressive nature of the Ebro canyons, there are towns that overlook the routes and whose beauty is undeniable . One of them is Cortiguera, where the writer Miguel Delibes was inspired to write his novel The disputed vote of Señor Cayo .

From Cortiguera we go to Valdelateja, which, sunk in the bottom of the valley, welcomes the junction of the Ebro and the Rudrón. It houses various monuments of interest, such as Castrosiero, the old Visigothic archaeological site; the hermitage of Santa Centola and Santa Elena; the hermitage of San Antonio or the parish church of Santa Eulalia.

However, the most prominent may be one that we have already named: Orbaneja del Castillo, declared a Historic-Artistic Site. Here you can visit the Cueva del Azar and the Cueva del Agua, from which a stream runs through the town until it cascades into the Ebro.

Also of great importance is Pesquera del Ebro, a town with emblazoned houses and old palaces. There you have to see the San Sebastián parish church, its innumerable noble coats of arms; or the bridge over the Ebro, which shows off all the beauty of its primitive medieval structure.

As you may have seen, the canyons of the Ebro give shape to a unique place due to its beautiful landscape. A place to enjoy nature and visit villages full of charm. What are you waiting to visit this place?
