Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic, and for years it was the capital of the kingdom of Bohemia and Czechoslovakia. Its historical heritage makes it one of the most visited cities in the world. In fact, since 1992, its historic center is a World Heritage Site. 1. We enter the Old City
It is the true heart of Prague in the Czech Republic. In it we find corners of impressive beauty, such as the Old Town square. It is the main jewel of this neighborhood and around it you can discover a set of wonderful monuments.
First of all, the old town hall stands out. It was built in 1338 and in it you can admire a beautiful Gothic tower. By the way, you can climb it to enjoy magnificent views of the center of Prague.
You also have to stop at the unique astronomical clock, from the 15th century and one of the most famous in the world. At every hour the figures of the apostles appear, accompanied by four figures. These are Lust, Greed, Vanity, and Death. A watch that has become the symbol of the city.
Of course, you have to visit the Church of Our Lady of Týn. Its construction began in the 14th century in the Gothic style, although its interior is Baroque. It has visits in Spanish and at night the lighting of the church is spectacular.
2. Charles Bridge
It is the oldest bridge in the city, named after its promoter, King Carlos IV. Built in the 14th century, it is half a kilometer long and was built to replace the old Judit bridge, which was washed away by a flood.
Several things make this bridge special. The first one is that it shapes one of the most beautiful images of Prague. Seeing it from a distance and crossing it is always spectacular, but especially at sunset.
And it is also special because it is adorned by a set of thirty beautiful statues. One of them is that of San Juan Nepomuceno, thrown into the river from here in the 14th century and sanctified four centuries later. It is tradition to put your hand at the base of the statue and make a wish.
3. Prague Castle
We ended our visit in the wonderful Prague Castle. It is one of the largest citadels in the world and another of the jewels of the city. Its construction began in the 9th century, for this reason it is often said that the castle was born at the same time as the history of Prague.
For centuries it was the residence of the kings of Bohemia, emperors of the Germanic Roman Empire and other personalities related to the government of the country. It is 570 meters long and 130 meters wide and is a real city.
Inside you can admire impressive monuments such as the Royal Palace and the cathedral. You should also look for places like the Black Tower, known for the fire that left it this ash color; the Daliborka tower, where prisoners are held; and, finally, the Powder Tower.
They are monuments that are connected by narrow streets that take us directly to the Middle Ages. Don’t miss the Callejón de Oro, with its colorful houses that were occupied by goldsmiths centuries ago. A curiosity: Franz Kafka lived at number 22 for a few months.
Definitely, Prague in the Czech Republic is a beautiful city and, above all, a survivor. Since its creation in the 9th century, it has been one of the most important capitals in Europe.
