We’re Going On A Cruise In The Norwegian Fjords

We are going on a cruise in the Norwegian fjords

Cruising the Norwegian fjords is one of the most impressive experiences in Europe. A trip to the north of the continent. Literally, because we mean its northernmost area. In addition to spectacular waterfalls, sublime landscapes or cities declared World Heritage, traveling to the Norwegian fjords means reaching places like North Cape, a true goal for the most intrepid travelers.

Go sailing on a Norwegian fjord cruise

There are many travel agencies that offer the most complete and varied itineraries for a cruise through the Norwegian fjords. However, if you travel to the Scandinavian country on your own, you can also hire attractive excursions through the fjords there.

On a tour of the fjords, you will discover some places that are jewels of nature and that are worth discovering both by water and by land. But in any case, the objective is not to miss some of the places that we mention below.

Bergen, the great port of Norwegian fjord cruises

Bergen is considered to be the gateway to the fjords. But it is clear that it is not a mere place of passage. It is a unique city, with a colorful port of small wooden houses and a green and mountainous environment that seems to us the scene of a story.

What’s more, Bergen is the most beautiful city in Norway. A place where you can quickly fill up the memory card of your camera, and even more so if you walk on a sunny day along its promenade on the Hanseatic quay and go to the traditional fish market.

Flam and his train

Another obligatory stop during a cruise through the Norwegian fjords is the town of Flam. Not only because this town has a huge attraction, but because this is the place where you can board one of the most impressive trains in the world: the Tram railway.

A journey on rails that crosses exceptional wild landscapes. But it also  has as a reward the arrival to the interior of Sognefjord, whose translation is an invitation to your visit. We are talking about the Fjord of Dreams, one of the most beautiful in the country.

North Cape, the end of any Norwegian fjord cruise

We have already advanced it before. With a cruise through the Norwegian fjords we can reach the northernmost point of the continent. To the North Cape, the place where Europe ends and the frozen Arctic Ocean opens up before our eyes.

To get to such a magical place it is necessary to make an unforgettable sea voyage from the port of Honningsvag. And since you sure do in summer, the ideal is to be there with the midnight sun. I said, unforgettable!

The most famous waterfalls in the fjords

Sailing on a cruise through the Norwegian fjords allows you to enter these arms of the sea and feel tiny in front of those huge landscapes. And the great icon of that special beauty are the many waterfalls that pour their waters from incredible heights to the sea. They are numerous and it would be very long to list them, so here we will only talk about two of them.

The first one that we are going to name is the Seven Sisters waterfall, which can be admired in the Geiranger fjord. Through its seven branches the waters of the thaw descend along its more than 200 meters of route.

And right in front of it is the legendary Pretender waterfall, whose shape is reminiscent of a bottle like the one drank by a boy who wanted to make the nearby “seven sisters” fall in love.

Trondheim and the Vikings

But do not think that a cruise through the Norwegian fjords only offers us the contemplation of wonderful places. It is also possible to take the opportunity to learn about a surprising European culture, about which there are many false myths. We are talking about the Vikings. And one of the best places to meet them and marvel at the history of these exceptional sailors is the city of Trondheim.
